My belief is it important to have dependable constant online income if moving to the Philippines. The reason is pretty simple, if someone were to depend on a getting job (one of my dreams is not having a need to work, a few of my ex-employers would suggest they paid me for doing nothing good.) when they arrive it would be difficult and success will only bare low wages. The Philippines as a whole is a poor country and the cost of living reflects as much. …

As the situation stands I can afford to live in the Philippines. What I can’t afford to do at this time is actually move and set myself up in a condo or apartment. An added cost to this entire venture is taking a trip to the Philippines prior to the move itself. Three weeks or maybe a little more will be my visit (yes Toni you can Barney sit during this trip) and during this time I will need to accomplish a lot.

The following is the very least I need to do during my first visit:

  • Narrow down where I wish to live if not decide. Based on:
  1. Dependable high-speed Internet
  2. Clear view of the sky for the purpose of satellite television. Does the Philippines sky see a DirecTV signal?
  3. Barney friendly preferably with a fenced yard.
  4. A washing machine, even though I am more likely to buy garments rather then wash any.
  5. At least 3 bedrooms and 2 comfort rooms.
  6. City with many single women. (even though it only takes one to annoy ;-) me endlessly)
  7. Ample public transportation although I do plan on buying a car.
  8. To be determined.
  • Travel to many cities and try to get to know some locals.
  • Go shopping, window shopping really for the purpose of learning the pace.
  • Maybe meet Bob Martin.
  • Spend at least a week in a city I think I would like to live in.
  • Determine based on my experience of the visit if the Philippines is a place I truly wish to live.

This idea to make money while living in the Philippines I am comfortable sharing with all of you (yes, all 8 of you). Let me know your thoughts on if it seems doable.

Mentioned in a the About Me page is the fact I have worked in the technology field for 15 years. My skills are varied from being able to build a secure private network from here to the Philippines or anywhere else, firewall configurations, router configurations, VPN’s, SQL server configurations and a lot more. I do believe learning is a good thing and the more one learns the better they are for it but to be honest at times I feel my mind is tired and wanted to take a break from learning more technology.

Many times over the last year or two I wanted a Blog. The subject of what I wanted the Blog to be about depended on the the day or the week. At times I wanted a Chicago sports Blog other times a Blog about some very stupid television shows. Lately I felt an urge to Blog about a bandit named Henry Paulson. …

My choices were to ask someone I knew how to setup a Blog on my own domain, learn how to do it myself or pay to set it up for me. Being in the field for so long means that I can learn how to do it much quicker then others if I wanted to put in the effort also being in the field means in no way would I ask someone I know from the industry to set it up for me. It is different to ask a colleague tips here and there but never for them to do the whole thing.

BUT I did not want to put in the effort learn so I came close many times at hiring someone to set it up, many times. This is where my idea comes in. I can start advertising at grocery stores, newspaper and craigslist.com that I can setup a Blog for anyone. Along with the setup of the Blog I will teach them how to use it. When setup using it once taught would be easy. Making a new post in a Blog only takes 30 seconds more then typing out the post.

How many people would want a Blog? This I don’t have a concrete answer for but I imagine many people that would like to have one does not even know where to look and are intimidated to even try. I have learned enough over the last few days that I could setup a functioning Blog to the liking of someone after spending only 30 minutes or so with them, even over the phone. My first thoughts (in a very long time) are to charge an upfront fee in addition to a monthly fee.

Let me know your thoughts and offer suggestions in the comment section of this post. The best thing about this idea is that I don’t need much startup capital to get started.

Savor the birdies!

Mike

If you want to earn on line, you must talk to Bob Martin. It appears to me that the best area for you will be around the Makati area. Good luck in your plans to live or visit ( do this first) in the Philippines.

Hi David - Thanks for the comment. Bob and I have emailed but yet to talk about business, perhaps someday soon. You mentioned the Makati area, do you mean for business or to live in? I will have to do some research on the area. Do you currently live in the Philippines?

Hi Mike - I’d like to address each of your list of things you “must have”:

    1. Any kind of tech thing like high speed internet will not be “dependable” as you say here in the Philippines. Sometimes it will be decent, sometimes it won’t work at all. You might go a few days without access, even once or twice a month. That’s just the way it is when you live in the third world. I mean, unless you are in a major city, you won’t even have electricity all the time!

    2. No. You can’t get directv here.

    3. Most houses in the Philippines don’t even have a yard, like what you would have in the States. If you do have a yard, it is often just a few square feet, and often it is all concrete.

    4. For a foreigner, unless you tend to be small in size, you may actually find it hard to buy clothes here. But, having a washing machine would be a good idea.

    5. Shouldn’t be a problem.

    6. No matter where you go, you won’t have any problem finding single girls. As a matter of fact, you will get to the point of trying to find a way to get rid of them!

    7. Public transportation is easy to find here.

Hi Bob - Do you have 2 Internet connections? If so is the service from the same company? If not when one of them goes down does the other work?

I know DirecTV is not sold in the Philippines but I wonder if the Philippines sky can “see” the satellite in orbit.

    Thanks for the comments!

Hi Mike - Yes, I have multiple Internet connections, both through Smart Communications. However, they use different infrastructure, so one can work while the other is down, or it might be down too. It just depends on where the outage is happening.

DirecTv footprint does not cover the Philippines. We are on the opposite side of the world, so no satellite could see both the US and the Philippines at the same time.

    Hi Mike,

I’m very interested in how your experiences will turn out. Also, I am fascinated by quite what it is that is drawing you to the Philippines? Is it the nice warm though frequently very wet and windy climate, especially further north in the Philippines? Or is it the beautiful girls? Or is it the promise of economic living? Go on, spill the beans!!! I am very surprised that you have made this decision without apparently having visited the Philippines yet. I certainly love both Manila and Davao for their own individual reasons; and indeed I sometimes watch videos on youtube which make me feel “homesick”! It gets my vote over and over again, and I’d certainly say NOTHING to put you off in any way. As an individual, I don’t put down roots too much, and even thought of Saudi Arabia as home after six months, but for other people, settling permanently in a strange place, especially one as strange (though wonderful) as the Philippines. So, I will be watching your progress with much interest.

It is the intention of my Wife (filipina) and I to move permanently to the Phils. in around ten years or so, and although currently living in the UK, we are considering moving to Australia next year for a number of reasons, not the least of which is easier travel on a more frequent basis into the Phils. to manage and be involved in the building project we plan for our own eventual house.

As for your business idea, I am a building refurbishment specialist, and although fairly techno savvy, not an expert by any means, but isn’t it fairly easy to set up a blog via google or other companies now? It would seem that you need to talk to Bob Martin on this subject; his LIP site has grown and developed considerably in the last year and he seems to have made providing services to foreigners with connections to the Philippines a succesful business.

I wish you very well, and will offer any help or advice freely and willingly on request.

    Jim

Hi Bob - When I move I think one of the things I am going to bring with me is the actual satellite, just can’t give up NFL football even if I am a Bears fan. The good news is that there are ways to watch the games, Slingbox and others. Won’t be the same but it will work. Thanks for the info.

Hi Jim - About moving to the Philippines, not a single time did beautiful girls enter into my thinking however since the thought arrived I would be a liar if I suggested the thought did not cross my mind. Economic living is a major player in this thought along with a new experience are the main ones. I do love living in America even with the 850B sell-out but the thought of something new and adventurous is a huge driving force. Have proved many times I can adapt to any situation, while moving the Philippines may be my greatest challenge I think I can happily do so.

While I have already decided to prepare for this move the truth is I am not going to make it official until after I visit. Hopeful this will happen in January, really depends on my progress of selling my current business, growing it and starting a revenue stream from other ventures I am currently working on.

My other business business ideas do not include my site although I am hopeful this site will grow and gain ad revenue, hopefully more people like you will find this site of interest. It is fairly easy to setup a blog however doing it right takes a lot of time and effort. I visit many blogs, some of which are so “busy” I can even read even if the content is good. Aside from aesthetics a lot of work needs to be done to find such advertisers, optimizing the site for search engines, reading, reading, reading other blogs, posting on other blog and joining blog communities to make yourself known so others can find your site is a ton of work. Most people are too for such an effort or unaware. How did you find this site? Your answer will likely be a result of all my reading and posting. You write very well, if you would like to do some blogging yourself let me know as I can find some space on this site for you.

    Thanks for your comment.

    Hi Mike,

Thank you for your invitation to do a little blogging on your site. I would be happy to write an occasional piece around the experiences of having a Filipino Wife, the process, for example, we have just been through to get my Mother-in-Law a UK visa to travel here for a six month visit..she arrives on Oct 29th…and my experiences during my visits to the Philippines. Let me know if this is the kind of thing you were interested in. I can’t say that I would promise to write on a weekly basis, but reasonably regularly for a time anyway.

    Best wishes,

    Jim

Hi Jim - You may write at your own pace, any Philippine experiences or stories that you think would be helpful for readers would be great. Later I will send you email with access. Look forward to reading your posts.
